AUTUMN FAIR RECALLS EARLY VERMONT

7
The colors, sounds and flavors of early Vermont will entertain visitors during Ethan Allen Homestead’s Autumn Fair on Saturday, October 7, from 10-4 p.m.

Acres of fertile soil along the Winooski River have sustained farming families since Ethan Allen’s time. Autumn Fair celebrates the fall harvest and offers activities centering on Vermont’s relationship to the land and the bounty of the season. All are welcome to explore the drama of daily life in an early Vermont settlement, featuring the use of 18th-century farm implements, growing techniques and food storage. Tours will include hands-on lessons in hearth cooking, corn grinding and cider pressing. Visitors can refresh themselves with Vermont cheese and hearty baked goods that would have been produced on the Allen farm.

Ethan and Fanny’s home will come alive with costumed interpreters preparing food in the kitchen, hanging vegetables to dry in the attic, making netting by the fire and serving tea in the parlor. On the grounds, visitors can enjoy demonstrations of colonial-era skills such as flax processing, shoemaking, woodworking and heirloom gardening. Children are welcome to try their hand at toys and games in the Homestead Tavern, hear some tall tales about Ethan Allen, and enjoy healthy outdoor exercise in our History Playground.

Admission to Autumn Fair will be $5 for adults and $3.00 for school age children. Members of the Friends of Ethan Allen Homestead will be admitted free. For more information, call the Homestead Museum at (802) 865-4556.
